Senior Front End Engineer

About Our Department - The Office of Digital Learning was created to transform teaching and learning at MIT and around the globe through the innovative use of digital technologies

The Engineering Department at ODL is looking for a full time Front End Engineer to join a small but fast growing team with big ambitions to redefine the use of technology in teaching and learning at MIT and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Use JavaScript, CSS3, HTML5, and other cutting-edge front-end technologies to create high-performance user experiences.
  • Develop enhancements for MITx, the MIT instance of Open edX (https://code.edx.org) used for residential teaching and learning.
  • Advance best practices with the engineering team through participation in architecture, technical design and code reviews
  • Fix bugs and solve problems, write documentation and automated tests
  • Work closely with, brainstorm ideas and incorporate feedback from, the engineering team, MIT community of developers, teachers and learners, Open edX community and open source community at large.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of web development experience in a professional environment, or equivalent.
  • Expert knowledge of web technologies (Javascript, HTML, CSS) and ability to write highly performant, accessible front-end code.
  • Excellent knowledge of JavaScript
  • Passionate about user experience and interface design
  • Experience developing rich applications with HTML/CSS/JS
  • Experience building cross-browser compliant applications with graceful degradation
  • Working knowledge of python
  • Experience developing rich applications with HTML/CSS/JS
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Be able to work collaboratively and build consensus

Desired

  • Experience with any MVC javascript framework (reactjs, angularjs, backbone, ember) is highly desirable.
  • Experience in Software Development Life Cycle and iterative methodologies.
  • Familiarity with source code control systems like GIT, Subversion, Mercurial.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies.
  • Aptitude and desire to be a "hands on" contributor
  • Github profile or link to open source work
  • Experience writing tests for JavaScript.
